Link Together - 4 October 2017

Wednesday 4 October, Duke Street Church Cafe, Duke Street, Richmond, TW9 1DH

In our October meeting we talked through how we can get involved in the latest WI campaign: Link Together, a campaign to help end loneliness and social isolation.

The resolution:
This meeting calls on every WI and the NFWI to work alongside health and social care providers and their local communities to raise awareness of the causes and impacts of loneliness, thus ensuring better identification of lonely people in order to be able to offer them the appropriate support and assistance
What you can do:

Bring your ideas and put your thinking caps on to help us explore how we can contribute to this essential cause.

Admission: free to members, £3 for visiting WI members, £4 for guests.

Our September meeting saw us meet on a new day and in a new venue! We were delighted to be able to use the fabulous space at Duke Street, and look forward to many an exciting activity there going forward.

Our guest speaker at this meeting was Welsh novelist Rhidian Brook, who discussed his latest book The Aftermath, which will be released as a film starring Keira Knightley in early 2018. We invited our members to read the book (this was also our Book Club's book of the month), and encouraged all to join in the discussion.

Reducing plastic waste - 6 July 2017

Plastic Soup Foundation

Thursday 6 July, 7.30pm The Old Ship Richmond, 3 King Street, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1ND

In our July meeting we looked at the WI Resolutions which have been voted through at this year's AGM, and look at how we can take an active involvement in the campaigns.

We had hoped to have a colleague from the Plastic Soup Foundation
join us via conference call from Amsterdam and talk to us about plastic microfiber pollution in our oceans, but sadly extreme weather didn't allow us this chance! We hope to welcome a colleague from the Foundation via conference call at another meeting soon. This informative and insightful talk was aimed to help us to think about our WI's contribution to the overall NFWI campaign to end plastic soup - one of the Resolutions passed in June.

Luckily one of our very own fabulous new members, Alison, stepped in and gave us a fantastic impromptu talk on how we can reduce our plastic usage in our daily lives. From using reusable shopping bags to taking our very own metal drinking straw out with us, there are lots of ways we can reduce the demand on this environmentally damaging product. Thank you, Alison.

Our personal nutrition - June 2017 meeting

Thursday 1 June 2017, 7.30pm The Old Ship Richmond, 3 King Street, Richmond, Surrey, TW9 1ND

Change of speaker: we are now delighted to welcome nutritionist May Simpkin to our next meeting!

May will get us thinking about our own personal nutrition: what do we really need to be eating, based on our lifestyles, so that we can be as healthy and energised as possible? What should we be thinking about? And what could we do to make healthy changes in our diets?

At this meeting, May will talk to us about her work and get us thinking about healthy choices for ourselves. She'll even help us draw up our own healthy eating plans for this summer - so we invite you to bring along any thoughts, notes and ideas for your own plan.

We look forward to welcoming you.
